Protecting Our Houses of Worship Series (PHOWS)

CONGREGATION SAFETY PACKAGE

* Every child in school is taught how to respond to a threating situation, such as a fire or severe weather.

         * On every flight, before take off, a safety briefing is given by the flight team about emergency procedures.

                  * Companies hold annual safety training or drills for their employees on a regular basis.

But for some reason, we seldom speak of safety with our HOW members when they are at services. Why?

We need to change that. So we are launching a free grass roots campaign to provide any House of Worship with the tools to help have this conversation with their members, in an easy and non-threating way at any time throughout the year. In fact, National Preparedness Month (September Ready.gov) is a great opportunity to connect with your members and inform them of basic emergency procedures that your House of Worship has in place. Being honest, in most cases, members are never informed about safety procedures.

What does the free package offer? It includes:

    * The brief 6-minute non-threating but informative video.

    * A locally customizable script to be read after the video is played, which should take another 6-minutes.

    * Finally, a set of optional slides your AV team can display in the event of an incident

You are invited to join the mission and inform your congregation and members, not in an email, but during a service, at least annually, of basic safety procedures you have at your House of Worship. This package serves as a great way to have the discussion with those that attend.

But how do you start the conversation during a service? How about something like this as your Faith leader says: "We are joining other Houses of Worship in our Community (during National Preparedness Month) to help support our members around our safety procedures. Please join me in watching this brief video, and after it, we will share with you a few specific safety actions in our House of Worship that we want you to be aware of."

It is that easy. This is a small investment of time that reinforces a culture of care, stewardship, and community—ensuring those who gather with you each week feel both spiritually and physically supported. Approaching the topic with care shows love and concern for the well-being of your members. It's not about creating fear - it's about empowering people with knowledge and conficence so they feel supported and protected, no matter where they be.

Your members are counting on you -- but the next step is yours to take. Download the Safety Package, then commit as a House of Worship leadership to specific date(s) and build the time needed into your services. Align across your team to set a dedicated week where it is offered at every service, ensuring every member hears this vital mesage.

Implement a safety briefing, lead with courage, and make this an annual event -- just like schools, flights and companies do. Together, let's deliver Faith WITH Safety, as every minute counts when an incident occures.
